Most of you probably read this blog and think “I could really use more payroll tax content.” We kid.

spotlight on small business taxes

But the reality of running a small business is that if you don’t keep up with your taxes, the tax man will keep up with you. And payroll taxes involve complexity at the federal, state, and local levels, with the degree of complexity depending on where your business is and where your employees live.

If you’re reading this, you’re likely either trying to navigate the maze of DIY payroll or considering outsourcing your payroll to a service provider like SurePayroll. Depending on where you are in the process, you may or may not have a must-have/nice-to-have list defined yet.

But we can tell you what should be at the top of every list: tax payment and filing. That’s really what you’re looking to outsource. And not all payroll services are equal when it comes to tax protection:

  • Some offer no specific guarantee;
  • Some offer guarantees if you buy into their premium service model;
  • And SurePayroll? We offer small business owners an added layer of protection with our taxes paid and filed guarantee: if you receive a notice from the IRS, or any other tax agency, based on a filing that SurePayroll made, we’ll work with the agency to help resolve the issue on your behalf.  And, if we’re at fault, we’ll pay all the associated penalties and fines.

In fact, we have an entire behind-the-scenes tax support team devoted to ensuring that tax filings are accurate and on-time, and resolving any filing issues with government agencies as they arise.

Their work this year resulted in double digit reductions on new tax notices for clients using SurePayroll, as well as decreases in open manual paper returns, open adjustments, open amendments, and required W-2Cs. Nearly 100% of clients also had access to their W-2s by December 31st, putting them a full month ahead of the curve in terms of the deadline for providing W-2 forms to employees.

And, these achievements were recently recognized with a Silver Stevie Award for Back-Office Customer Service Team of the Year in Financial Services.

To help keep you up to date with new tax regulations, we’ll be introducing a new monthly feature: Spotlight on Small Business Taxes by State. The last Wednesday of each month, we will cover a different state and discuss its tax complexities and any new tax requirements introduced in the calendar year, as well as how SurePayroll is keeping our clients in that state compliant with these regulations.

Be sure to check back on May 30th for our first installment, which will focus on New York.
